Email & Text Phishing - Don’t Take the Bait

What is it?
Phishing emails and texts look like they come from your bank, CRA, or delivery company. They often contain links that lead to fake websites designed to steal your information.

Why does it work?
They use official logos, urgent messages, and scare tactics like:

  • “Your account will be suspended.”

  • “Confirm your SIN immediately.”

  • “Your package cannot be delivered until you pay.”

Real Example:
Hundreds of seniors received fake CRA texts during tax season asking them to “verify” their information. Many gave away bank details.

Warning Signs:

  • Poor spelling or unusual language.

  • Suspicious links (hover your mouse to see the real address).

  • Pressure to act immediately.

How to Prevent It:

  1. Don’t click links. Type the official website into your browser.

  2. Banks and CRA never ask for personal info by text or email.

  3. Use two-factor authentication (text code to your phone) for banking.

  4. If in doubt, call your bank directly at their official number.

Tip: If you suspect a scam, show the message to a younger family member or trusted friend before acting.

Remember:

Scammers win when you act fast. You win when you pause and check. Always take your time - and if you’re unsure, talk to someone you trust before making a decision.
