The Prize & Lottery Scam. “Congratulations! You’ve Won!”

What is it?
You receive a letter, email, or phone call claiming you’ve won a jackpot, cruise, or luxury car. The catch? You must pay “taxes,” “fees,” or “insurance” first.

Why does it work?
Excitement makes people overlook warning signs. The promise of easy money is powerful.

Real Example:
In Quebec, a senior got letters saying he won a “European lottery.” He sent more than $10,000 over six months to cover “processing fees.” The prize never existed.

Warning Signs:

  • You never entered the contest.

  • You’re asked to pay upfront.

  • The offer is “secret” or very urgent.

How to Prevent It:

  1. Remember: If you didn’t buy a ticket, you didn’t win.

  2. No real lottery asks for money upfront.

  3. Talk to a family member before responding to any prize notice.

  4. Look up the company online - most scams are reported.

Tip: Put a sticky note on your phone or computer that says: “Stop and check before sending money.”

Remember:

Scammers win when you act fast. You win when you pause and check. Always take your time - and if you’re unsure, talk to someone you trust before making a decision.
