The Fake Tech Support Scam “Your Computer Has a Virus!”

What is it?
Scammers call pretending to be from Microsoft, Apple, or your internet provider. Sometimes you’ll see a scary popup message on your screen that says: “Warning! Your computer is infected. Call this number immediately!”

They then convince you to:

  • Pay for fake repairs

  • Give them remote control of your computer

  • Share credit card or bank info

Why does it work?
Because computers can be confusing. Scammers sound professional, and fear makes people act quickly.

Real Example:
A 72-year-old man received a call from “Microsoft.” He was told his bank account was hacked and to install remote software. Within minutes, the scammer accessed his online banking and drained $12,000.

Warning Signs:

  • Unsolicited calls saying you have a problem.

  • Requests to install programs like “TeamViewer” or “AnyDesk.”

  • Demands for payment in gift cards or wire transfers.

How to Prevent It:

  1. Remember: Microsoft, Apple, and banks don’t call you out of the blue.

  2. Don’t trust scary popups - close your browser or restart.

  3. Only let trusted people access your computer remotely.

  4. Install reliable antivirus software and keep it updated.

Tip for families: Write down a list of safe phone numbers for your loved one (bank, internet provider, tech helper) so they know who to call first.

Remember:

Scammers win when you act fast. You win when you pause and check. Always take your time - and if you’re unsure, talk to someone you trust before making a decision.
