Romance & Friendship Scams. Protecting Your Heart and Wallet
What is it?
Scammers create fake online profiles on Facebook, WhatsApp, or dating sites. They chat daily, build trust, and then ask for money to cover “emergencies.”
Why does it work?
Scammers are patient. They use affection, attention, and even stolen photos to create the illusion of love or friendship.
Real Example:
A widowed senior in Canada believed she was helping her “online boyfriend” stranded overseas. She sent $80,000 before discovering he wasn’t real.
Warning Signs:
The person avoids meeting in real life.
They quickly say “I love you.”
They ask for secrecy and money.
How to Prevent It:
Never send money or personal info to someone you haven’t met in person.
Use Google Image Search to check if their photo is stolen.
Talk to family or friends if you feel pressured.
Remember: real love doesn’t ask for money.
Tip: Keep online friendships public at first - avoid moving to private chats too quickly.
Remember:
“Scammers win when you act fast. You win when you pause and check. Always take your time - and if you’re unsure, talk to someone you trust before making a decision.”
